PCB Design Process & Workflow

 




There are 11 steps to the PCB design process & work flow which we cover in the pcb design guide.

Step 1: Finalize your Circuit Design – Everything starts with the circuit design. Without a circuit there is no need for a pcb. In the old days most circuits were hand drawn and later captured electronically. In today’s world of modern computing, the circuit design is capture directly into a schematic. For the sake of clarity we’ve added this as step 1 in the pcb design guide.

Step 2: Choose PCB Design Software – Many times electrical engineers don’t have a choice when it comes to choosing the pcb design software. Their companies have invested thousands into software packages and all their legacy design are captures in those packages, and therefore are “stuck”. However the hobbiest has several choices. Its important to choose a package that is first and foremost easy to use, but also capable of completing the pcb design as some packages won’t be able to handle the complexity.

Step 3: Capture Your Schematic – As mentioned earlier its likely that the circuit design is being captured electronically from the start. In general “capturing the schematic” is the process by which each component is drawn electronically and are interconnected with each other.

Step 4: Design Component Footprints – Once the schematic is complete its time to draw the physical outline of each of the components. These outlines are what are placed on the pcb in copper to allow the components to be soldered to the printed wiring board.

Step 5: Establish PCB Outline – Each project will have restrictions related to the board outline. This should be determined in this step since an idea of component count and area should be known.

Step 6: Setup Design Rules – With the pcb outline and pcb footprints complete is just about time to start the placement. Before placement thought you should setup the design rules to ensure that components or traces aren’t to close together. This is only one example as there are probably hundreds of different rules that can be applied to a pcb design.

Step 7: Place Components – Now its time to move each component onto the pcb and begin the tedious work of making all those components fit together. This is where you’ll find that pcb design is really a jigsaw puzzle.

Step 8: Manual Route Traces – It’s necessary to manually route critical traces. Clocks. Power. Sensitive analog traces. Once that’s complete you can turn it over to Step 9.

Step 9: Using the Auto Router – There are a handful of rules that will need to be applied for using an autorouter, but doing so will save you hours if not days of routing traces.

Step 10: Run Design Rule Checker – Most pcb design software packages have a very good setup of design rule checkers. Its easy to violate pcb spacing rules and this will pinpoint the error saving you from having to respin the pcb.

Step 11: Output Gerber Files – Once the board is error free it’s time to output the gerber files. These files are universal and are needed by the pcb fabrication houses to manufacture your printed circuit board.

Copper Traces

The copper traces on your PCB are easily the most important part of the design so it is important to understand what they’re doing and what limitations you should consider.
As I mentioned earlier, copper traces are created by removing copper from the solid sheet that sits on top of the base material.
This means that the traces on your board are in fact just thin layers of copper. I don’t know about you, but when I discovered that it came as a bit of a surprise (relax I didn’t just find this out). For the longest time I assumed that PCBs were manufactured by pouring copper into a mold, letting it cool, and then somehow melting an insulator around the copper.
The thin sheet nature of these traces mean that there are some constraints to consider when routing your traces, most importantly, size considerations. All of these nuances will be discussed in detail in part 2.

Fr-4 material

PCB technology situation test

Actually PCB repair and inspection flow is like the following:

Step 1: Ask customer about the appearance when the PCB is broken down.
Step 2: Analyze the reason of breakdown according to customer description;
Step 3: Dissemble device and clean it thoroughly; confirm the components being damaged and then assess the feasibility of can-be REPAIR;
Step 4: Analyze the circuit schematic diagram according to the location of damaged components, find out the root cause of components being damaged and prevent similar situations happen again;
Step 5: ask for customer’s permission to replace the components, get collect comment from customer, starts to repair after receipt of customer confirmation on quote;
Step 6: Repair service include eliminate the existing problems and faults, replace damaged components, clean the entire device thoroughly and required maintenance;
Step 7: Instruct SIMULATIVE LOAD TEST after repairing process finish, once pass the test will send to customer for further on-site testing.

How to copy a printed circuit board

Surface Finish——Immersion silver

    There’re different surface finishes for PCB boards, including immersion silver, immersion gold, OSP, HASL and so on. Here I would like to introduce the surface finish—immersion silver. Sterling immersion silver is an immersion process for plating a silver deposit on copper, designed to be used as a final finish for printed circuit boards. Immersion silver is quickly becoming the surface finish of choice for PCB fabricators, assemblers and end-users. Immersion silver finish can offer outstanding solder ability, contact functionality, aluminum wire-bonding, solder-joint strength, and is a drop-in replacement for HASL. Some PCB boards may apply both HASL finish and immersion silver finish. The apparent difference between HASL and immersion silver is the color of immersion silver is more matte than HASL. Also, immersion silver can be touched more flushed than HASL.

Using the immersion method of metal deposition, sterling silver is deposited on printed circuit boards as the surface finish. Immersion deposition is also employed in the process of the deposition of gold in the process of ENIG. As the widespread use of immersion silver, a main problem may occur in the PCB fabricating. We called it SMIA (Solder Mask Interface Attack). Silver is deposited to a thickness of 6-18microinches, with a proportional copper dissolution. In some extreme cases, the copper is excessively attacked at the solder mask and copper interface, particularly on conductor traces. That’s what we called just now SMIA. SMIA is a problem which will cause a reduction in conductor width; negatively will affect controlled impedance and extremely will cause open circuits. So when making the immersion silver finish, we should control the volume of chemical material and control the technique.
   Solder Mask Interface Attack (SMIA) can pose a problem to the PCB manufacturer. However, several options for minimizing and eliminating the phenomenon are readily available and easy to implement. To improve the solder mask profile and its adhesion to copper is the most effective avenue in resolving the SMIA. Improving the solder mask side wall profile prevents corrosive chemistry from being entrapped under the solder mask and excessively corroding the underlying copper. Solder mask process parameters are the most successful avenue to investigate and optimize for elimination of SMIA. So having a good command of the solutions for SMIA can commendably avoid the problem.

Multilayer PCB design method (X)

11.4.2 The electrical layer segmentation method

Connect to the.net option is used to specify the divided region is connected network. Usually in electric layer is used for power supply and network layout, but in the Connect to net the drop-down list as you can see, the inner layer of the whole network can be connected to the network signal, used in signal transmission, don't just general designer. Weak signals required by the voltage and current, small requirement to the wire, and power supply current is big, need a smaller equivalent internal resistance.So general signal in signal layer line, dedicated to the power supply and electrical layer network connections.

Board Materials

First we should understand what materials go into a PCB. At the most basic level, the base of the PCBA manufacturer is formed out of some sort of solid, non-conductive, material. This material is then laminated with a copper (or other metal) sheet, this creates the conductive surface.
The base material is usually a type of glass-reinforced epoxy known as FR-4. This is the most common material because it is flame resistant, cheap, and of course has a low conductivity.
For higher performance circuits (RF), there are other types of materials to consider such as ceramic or PTFE bases with various fillers. Since this article is more focused on general PCB design I will not go into details about designing for RF. Fortunately the EDN Network has posted a useful article on choosing PCB materials for high frequency circuits.
Really these two materials are about all that goes into a bare PCB. When you send your design for manufacture (or do it yourself) the electrical connections are usually created by removing select copper portions of the bare PCB.

Prototype PCB Necessity and Benefits(2)----Wonderful PCB (hk) Limited

The PCB board manufacturing prototypes are checked in all critical conditions as everything must be checked and every problem must be solved before the production. Again, the leads and traces are re-measured so that it meets the required thickness. The VIAS and holes need individual programming for each board and their making process is also sophisticated. The tolerances and electrical signals are tested even after the addition of the surface components.
When all the components are added and it is made as the specification, it is finally tested for several times for the required result. The board must also be able to provide proper reliability and effectiveness. In this time, the board is tested without planting it in the environment it is made for. And all steps are recorded. 
And when it meets the standard quality, it is sent for production. But if any wrong occurs, it is tested again and sent for further solution. Even sometimes the whole design is changed for the failure in tests.
The prototype is made by the companies to check their products and inventions before manufacturing. And thus it helps a great deal in the development of PCB.

Multilayer PCB design method

11.3 The Middle layer create and set up
Middle layer, is in the PCB layers between the top and bottom, its structure as shown in figure 1-1, readers can refer to figure the annotations to understand.  How to complete the middle layer in the process of production? Simply sandwich plate is to suppress multiple single plate and double plate, the middle layer is the original single panel and double panel at the top or bottom. Similarly, multilayer PCB is in more than one plate layer adopts the suppression process again after the completion of the compressed into a piece of circuit board, and in order to reduce costs and via interference, multilayer PCB often was not much thicker than the double plate and single board, this makes the composition of multilayer PCB board layer relative to the ordinary double-layer plate and the thickness of single layer board often smaller, lower mechanical strength, higher demand for processing. So the multilayer PCB production costs compared with the ordinary double plate and the single board will be expensive.

Double-sided PCB Fabrication Process I

PCB fabrication process of double-sided PCB is more complicate than that of single-sided PCB. One of the major differences is that double-sided PCB board normally requires electroplating while single-sided PCB fabrication process does not. The design process using CAD is similar except that you have more layers for your circuit to route. In order to minimize cross talk and noise coupling, top and bottom traces should be routed at orthogonal to each other. Additional fabrication processes of double-sided PCB involving electroless copper plating, copper plating and metallic etch resist plating. There are more parameters to be considered; for example, the size of PTH, top and bottom layer isolation and current density of PTH comes into considerations.

PTH is a metallized hole that provides a conductive path between layers of PCB. It is also known as via hole since it provides connection between locations. PTH can be made by using chemical deposit or direct metallalization. As the demands for more compact circuit increase, direct metallization will become more popular. In addition, laser ablation with fine line technology is needed for interconnection. Pin Grid Array Package (PGA) and Ball Grid Array package (BGA) with 50 Mil pitch make micro-vias and fine line technology indispensable. State of the art BGA technology requires a design rule of 6 Mil spacing, 6 Mil trace, 24 Mil diameter pad, 24 Mil diameter mask and 12 Mil diameter hole.

Drilling
The raw laminate is first cut into the required size for drilling. All holes, including PTH holes are drilled using a high-speed numerically controlled drilling station. For manual drilling, a optical drilling is necessary for accurate hole positioning so as to ensure a correct front-back registration. Noted that in a PTH process, the hole size should be slightly larger than that of the single-sided PCB to accommodate the increase in PTH wall thickness due to electroplating.
After drilling, the PCB should be deburred and cleaned so as to remove the dirt and oxidation on copper and debris in the hole. Remove all sharp copper edges so that it cannot interfere with the electroplating process. The PCB should be cleaned using alkaline detergent and slightly etch in a 10% sulfuric acid bath.

Electroless Copper Plating
Metallization is required on the wall of the drill holes to make them conductive. It can be done by chemical deposition or direct metallization. For double layer boards, chemical deposition is common. It is an electroless process because the deposition of copper is done in the absence of electrical current. The objective of the electroless copper plating process is to deposit a very thin layer of copper over the entire surface of the copper cladding and on bare hole walls. This layer should be thick enough to allow the electrical current during the subsequent electrolytic plating. Normally, a thickness of 0.001 Mil to 0.0025 Mil is acceptable for further electroplating at low start current. The thickness of the PTH will be increased to the required level after the electrolytic copper plating.

FPC for LED Application

LED is more and more popular in ordinary family. As we all know, the key part of LED light is printed circuit board. For LED PCB, we usually use metal core material like Aluminum to make circuit on it. As the development of society and diversification of demands, recently more and more people pay attention on the Flexible circuit with LED (or said LED Flexible circuit). Along with the FPC industry growing, as well as the LED application spread out, there’s continuing request of precision lighting & illumination in some special circumstance.

Flexible circuitry is the thinnest available in interconnection technology. The thickness of the dielectric film typically ranges from 7.5 to 125 mm (0.3 to 5 mils) with line widths and spacing as low as 1 mil. As a comparison, standard ribbon cables have minimum line spacing of about 25 mils, with 50 mils being the norm. This wide spacing can be attributed to the fact that ribbon cable typically uses a PVC insulator that is much thicker and heavier than the polymer dielectric film used in flexible circuits. Additionally, ribbon cable requires mechanical connectors for termination and cannot be used as an assembly medium.

(7) Thermal and Mechanical Characteristics
Flexible circuits commonly pass through different electrical, thermal, and mechanical environments. For example, the basic disk drive circuit moves back and forth millions of time over a rotating platter. Electrically, the flexible printed circuit compromises its signal integrity each time a trace carrying a signal is moved with respect to the surrounding electrical environment. Thermally, the circuit is exposed to the heat generated within the disk drive enclosure. Mechanically, the circuit works like a spring, either resisting or adding force to the mechanical movement. The design engineer must consider if the electrical problems will overshadow the mechanical problems or if the thermal problems will become the most dominant. All of these considerations can be discussed with a flexible printed circuit manufacturer to arrive at the best solution.
